Sustainable vs Unsustainable tourism
The Danube Delta- The land between the sky and water
The Danube Delta was formed over a period of more than 10,000 years and it continues to grow. It is also the youngest piece of land in Romania. It is the best preserved delta in Europe and it has entered the UNESCO list in 1991, being considered a biosphere reservation. It is a maze of lakes and channels, which meander through the largest compact reed surface in the world and is one of the areas with the highest biodiversity on the planet. Unfortunately, instead of preserving this important and amazing place, we destroy it by practicing unsustainable tourism.
A conclusive example of unsustainable tourism, is represented by the “one day trips” organized in the Danube Delta, promoted by certain tourism companies. These trips are considered by specialists to be toxic for the environment. The trips are made with powerful motorized means such as: off-road vehicles and high speed boats, in order for the tourists to visit as many places as possible in a very short time. Emissions from these means of transport pollute the air both locally and globally. Noise pollution is another source of suffering for the wildlife. Car engines, loud noises, drones, motor boats, change the activity patterns of animals. The birds interrupt their nesting, the animals and birds run away to hide their babies, they can no longer feed and rest and their nests are flooded by the waves produced by boats. The carpets of water lilies are shattered under these high speed boats. The garbage left behind by people pollutes both the water and the land, poisoning animals and locals. Waste collection is difficult, as only 10% of the Danube Delta’s surface is land.
The locals don’t earn anything. In the Danube Delta there is a ban on fishing and hunting. Agriculture is not practiced. Tourism is supposed to help them, but in these “one day trips”, tourists don’t have time for the beauty of local traditions and gastronomy.
If empathy worked among people, the traumas that Delta animals are subjected to after “one day trips”, would summarize as:
Through the middle of my house passes a busy road. I should always be careful, on alert, in order to not be injured. The noise I have to endure would be terrible, it would bother me and not let me rest. The toxins I would breathe would suffocate me. I won’t be able to feed myself, relax, enjoy my life; I would be permanently stressed and exhausted.
